Frequently Asked Questions about Reverse Osmosis
What is a reverse osmosis system?
A reverse osmosis (RO) system is an advanced water filtration technology that uses a semi-permeable membrane to remove very small contaminants. It can filter particles as small as 0.0001 microns, including dissolved solids, heavy metals, and microplastics, providing highly purified water.
Does reverse osmosis remove minerals from water?
Yes. Reverse osmosis removes not only harmful contaminants but also naturally occurring minerals like calcium and magnesium. While this results in very pure water, it also means the water can lose some beneficial mineral content and flavor complexity.
Difference between water filter and reverse osmosis?
A standard water filter (such as an activated carbon filter) improves taste and reduces common contaminants like chlorine, lead, and microplastics, while retaining beneficial minerals. In contrast, reverse osmosis is a more intensive process that removes a wider range of impurities, including dissolved salts, but also eliminates minerals and usually requires more complex installation.
Does reverse osmosis produce wastewater?
Yes. Reverse osmosis systems generate wastewater during the filtration process. A portion of the incoming water is used to flush away the concentrated contaminants retained by the membrane, making RO less water-efficient compared to other filtration solutions.
